The Joy of Warm Glass
Now that we have conquered our first year of being in the paint your own pottery business we have decided to broaden our creative reach by introducing GLASS FUSION into the “create your own art” mix. Why? because I discovered how beautiful and how easy it is to design, and how wonderful all the stained glass looks through the windows. Not to mention, how functional it all is. WOW!! Art glass plates, serving dishes, tiles, jewelry or 3-D glass pieces all made by sprinkling, scattering or positioning various colored frits, confetti and stringers on a glass blank or in a casting pod. And for me, the best thing is “No Experience Necessary REALLY!!
There are many projects you can create without cutting any glass, but if you wish to add that next level of creativity it would probably be a good idea to take a Glass Fusing workshop. And, I will be thinking about giving one in the near future. For now We’re sticking to the basics until we’re all set up?
Now I will give a brief explanation of what “warm glass” and “glass fusing” is and how it all works.
The term warm glass refers to fusing, slumping and other glass processes which take place in a glass kiln at temperatures between 1100 and 1700 degrees Fahrenheit (600 to 925 Celsius). That doesn’t sound warm, but it is when you compare it to a glassblower’s working temperatures, which often exceed 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Glass fusing is the process of using a glass kiln to join together pieces of glass. If you apply heat to glass, it will soften. If you continue to apply heat, the glass will become more fluid and flow together. Two or more pieces of glass will stick (or “fuse") to each other. When compatible pieces of glass are heated and then cooled properly, the resulting fused glass piece will be solid and unbroken.
The term “fusing” is also used to describe the bending and shaping of glass using the heat of a glass kiln. This manipulation can take many forms, but the most common is slumping, where a mold is used to cause already fused glass to take on the shape of a bowl, a plate or similar object.
You can come in anytime and create glass tiles, plaques, plates, bowls, votives and other one-of-a-kind masterpieces that can be either functional or decorative.
Yes we are very excited about our new addition........
